Walk alongside a survivor while they pursue their dreams & Degrees

We hold the financial investment of scholarships in equal regard with relational investment.

Selection committee volunteers help the SHAN staff to objectively determine candidate readiness and the terms of financial distribution through interviewing candidates. Volunteers are provided coaching and materials in order to facilitate a successful interview process.

Mentors play an important part in the relational investment of scholarship awardees. Mentors provide an added layer of support for 12 months as awardees set out to achieve their goals.

Requirements:

Purpose of the Position

Mentorship plays an important role in the vision of SHAN which is to see all peoples affected by human trafficking thriving in the community. It is a required component of all SHAN’s scholarship programs. By creating a safe, professional environment the mentee can ask questions, receive guidance and support as they work towards bringing their dreams and/or goals to fruition. As a result, the mentee and mentor may advance in their healing and growth journeys through this process of empowerment.

Responsibilities + Culture

  • Mentors should lead in the spirit of empowering the mentee to achieve their goals in a gentle and compassionate yet firm manner. The effects of trauma may arise at any time thus patience and humility is of utmost importance in this role.

  • Mentorship at SHAN is focused on achieving goals and building friendship. In this role, it is important to uphold boundaries as uniquely identified by both the mentor and mentee. The program director will guide you through this discussion in an onboarding session as the mentorship timeline begins.

  • Mentors and mentees will share quarterly updates to the SHAN program director as well as report any areas of concern with regards to progress related to the program and/or personal wellbeing as needed.

Expectations

Scholarship mentors are not limited to but will be expected to meet with their mentee once a month, if possible, in person for one year. After one year (12 meetings), we encourage you to keep in contact with your mentee but there will be no formal expectations from She Has A Name.

Training

All volunteers are required to attend She Has A Name’s 3-session Anti-Human Trafficking Training and Trauma Responsive Care Training. Additionally, our partner, Freedom a la Cart, provides mentor training that can serve as a substitute for trauma responsive care training if needed.

Please feel more than welcome to ask the SHAN program director for additional resources. We want you to feel equipped in knowledge and connected to whomever you feel could provide you support as you fulfill your role.
