Fiscal Year 2020 Annual Report
July 1 2019 - June 30 2020
A Note from the Executive Director
If you’ve been around She Has A Name for a while, you might have noticed a subtle change to our mission statement. In the last year we completed our first strategic plan, and one outcome was replacing collaboration with advocacy.
This came out of our realization that collaboration is foundational to everything we do at SHAN. Over the last year we have blossomed into the legislative advocacy space, providing insight to our elected officials at the statehouse and representing those without the means to do so.
Thank you for learning and growing with us! We’re grateful for your continued support.
Courtney Schmackers, Executive Director
EDUCATE
We hold quarterly classes that offer a framework to understand human trafficking and care for those impacted. Training equips participants to define human trafficking, understand those impacted, and connect with local initiatives.
In 2019 over 750 people completed our three-part training, offered in August and November 2018 and February 2019. This includes those reached through nine off-site trainings. More than 80% of participants attended through referrals from She Has A Name’s network of partner organizations or a friend.
One thing I learned today that I can’t wait to share with a friend….
Let's do something because kindness matters
This was a great start to unpacking- I think it is so good to keep looking at the resources as a whole and keep people informed- great organization!
Demand reduction as a concept. It seems so obvious, but it is not something I've heard talked about until now
The importance of showing love and mercy to those affected by the demand side of human trafficking
“I’ve been working with victim help orgs for almost a year and I still learned something tonight, thank you.”
We also equipped working professionals in a variety of off-site settings. A few groups trained included associates at Abercrombie & Fitch’s world headquarters and ten central Ohio hotels through Columbus Hospitality Management.
COLLABORATE >> ADVOCATE
We act as a resource to organizations by advocating for policy and partners so that those impacted by human trafficking have access to the best community resources. Together we are able to connect resources and meet needs in creative ways.
Our inaugural Strategic Plan, completed in February of 2020, brought clarity to this pillar of programing. Collaboration runs through everything we do, but advocacy is a unique niche that we fill within the central Ohio anti-human trafficking cause.
“Freedom appreciates you educating the community on human trafficking issues in Central Ohio. You are a great resource and advocate for the cause! Thank you for your mission and bringing HT agencies together to provide information about their individual missions.”
She Has A Name began participating in legislative advocacy, offering expert witness testimony for relevant bills in the Ohio House of Representatives and Senate.
We connect organizational needs with community resources, orchestrating donation drives for programs in need from the start of the COVID-19 pandemic:
Jessica’s Hope received over $800 worth of personal hygiene products for survivors living at their safe house.
Sanctuary Night and Reaching for the Shining Starz received cloth masks to protect volunteers and sex workers
SHAN hosted a virtual baby shower for a survivor due in June 2020. Dozens of gifts were purchased from her registry!
CARE FOR THOSE IMPACTED
Our vision is to see all those impacted by human trafficking restored into society. We act as a resource by providing support groups for survivors, thrivers, and solicitors. Our hope is to not only care for those who have already experienced exploitation, but to prevent human trafficking before it ever starts.
She Has A Name awarded a financial scholarship in May 2020 to a survivor completing a degree at Columbus State Community College. In partnership with Lower Lights Ministries we offer a bi-monthly spiritual support group to the women in their program. SHAN gathers thrivers monthly for social and spiritual support.
We adopted Columbus’ private John School in February 2020 to provide holistic care to first time solicitation offenders. Many of those arrested experience similar childhood trauma or broken community that also makes victims vulnerable.
